FDNY Post 9/11 Deaths of Firefighters Rise

On that dreadful day, September 11, 2001, 343 firefighters lost their lives, now 22 years later; the number has been duplicated with the amount of FDNY employees who have now lost their lives due to illnesses related to that day.

There are now 11,000 firefighters suffering from either: melanoma, leukemia, thyroid, tonsil and prostate cancers due to the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Sadly, union leaders and the FDNY commissioner knows that number will only keep rising as the years come.

FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said, “343 of our heroes lost in one day, and today, 343 more. The FDNY will never forget them. This is our legacy. This is our promise.” Andrew Ansbro, Uniformed Firefighters Association President said, “To most people it’s a part of history, for the New York City firefighters it continues to be an ongoing tragedy.”
