Father Convicted of Involuntary Manslaughter Over Son’s Shooting

James Crumbley was convicted of involuntary manslaughter over his son’s shooting. James is the father of Ethan Crumbly, a teen that opened fire in November 2021 at Oxford High School killing four students: Madisyn Baldwin, 17; Tate Myre, 16; Justin Shilling, 17; and Hana St. Juliana, 14, and injuring seven others as well.

This conviction comes weeks after his wife, Jennifer Crumbley was also found guilty.

The Crumbley parents both pled not guilty to all the charges. Both also said they couldn’t foresee their son’s actions.

Prosecutors argued the parents could have prevented the shooting had they locked up the gun and got him mental health help he displayed warning signs of and the school had informed them of. The prosecutor said this case represents “accountability.”

“This verdict does not bring back their children, but it does mark a moment of accountability and will hopefully be another step to address and end and prevent gun violence,” Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said. “There were egregious facts in this case. These parents could have prevented this tragedy, it was foreseeable, with just the smallest of efforts.”

Ethan was sentenced to life in prison without parole. His parents are scheduled for sentencing on April 9.
