Fairness In Women’s Sports Continues

Updated: Feb 8

Today is National Girls and Women in Sports Day. President Ronald Reagan declared the first National Women in Sports Day in 1987.

In today’s world, there is a fine line of who is considered a woman in women’s sports.

As the rise of transgender athletes continues, several women are speaking out fighting for women and girls rights in sports.

Now, a volleyball team in Canada featured at least 2 transgender athletes, and reports say there were as many as 5 on the team, as they dominated the college match.

“Volleyball Canada believes in equal opportunity for all people to participate in the sport of volleyball. However, in instances where a Transgendered individual wishes to compete at a National Championship, Volleyball Canada will consider the eligibility guidelines set out in this policy in order to ensure a fair and level playing field for all participants,” Volleyball Canada said in a statement.

After a New Hampshire transgender athlete was favored to win the women’s high jump, Paula Scanlan tweeted, “soon it’ll be surprising when women/girls champions are actually female…”

Scanlan has been fighting along side advocate Riley Gaines.

Kim Russell, former Oberlin College lacrosse coach said, “…not just the opportunities that are taken away, but the dangers, the physical dangers and also, nobody is talking about how this affects the women and girls emotionally and mentally, and being in the locker room with naked males and how that affects them.”  She added, “It is never fair if they were born male…boys are stronger than girls, faster, quicker, all sorts of things and when you add the puberty to it, there’s no chance for women.”

Speaking about the dangers of women playing against biological men, Riley Gaines said, “…that’s not to say that injuries don’t and can’t happen when only women are playing women, but the severity and likelihood increase ten-fold when you put a man on the court or on the field.”
