Ernesto Leaves Puerto Rico Powerless

Updated: Aug 15

Tropical Storm Ernesto has now become a category 1 hurricane after it hit Puerto Rico overnight and leaves over 728,000 customers without power, which is nearly half of the island’s residents. There are also 435,000 customers without water and more than 400 people in shelters.

Ernesto’s heavy rain and strong winds downed many trees, caused flooding and left debris. Winds reached speeds of at least 50 mph.

Hurricane Ernesto is in the Atlantic Ocean and about 600 miles away from Bermuda and is expected to hit there by Saturday. Ernesto is expected to strengthen and could possibly turn into a category 2 or 3 hurricane.

There isn’t a direct threat to the Eastern states in the U.S., however there is an increasing risk of life threatening rip currents and high surf.
