Eleven-Year-Old Trans Is Pride Parade’s Grand Marshal

Saturday, Orlando’s Come Out With Pride Festival and Parade had the youngest grand marshal in the history, an eleven-year-old transgender child, Dempsey Jara.

Dempsey was the youngest grand marshal in the 18-year history of the event. Dempsey was born a boy and began transitioning at 5-years-old said her mother, schoolteacher Jaime Jara. Jaime said, “Dempsey has been gender non-conforming since she was 18 months old.” “She’s just always gravitated toward girl things, girls’ toys,” added Jaime. “ ‘She ‘d say, ‘I’m a girl in my heart and my brain.’ She’s been on this journey since she was five and she’s living her best life,” said Jaime.

Dempsey told reporters, “Being transgender is not about a choice, it’s about being true to myself.” Wearing her princess gown and heart shaped glasses, Dempsey also said, “It’s about embracing who I am even when the world tries to tell me otherwise. It’s about standing tall in my identity even when it’s really hard.”

The Jara family, from Long Island, changed Dempsey’s birth certificate in 2019 reflecting Dempsey’s gender change and have an Instagram page documenting her development.
