In a video posted by a Russian news outlet shows Ksenia Karelina, a 33-year-old American ballerina being arrested and detained in Russia. The video shows Karelina being hauled away in hand cuffs and blind folded. Karelina is being charged with high treason. Karelina’s alleged crime was donating $51 two years ago to a charity that supports Ukraine.
Karelina holds dual citizenship with America and Russia. She is now a resident in Los Angeles and spa manager in Beverly Hills, after moving to Maryland on a work-study program. Karelina is said to have gone back to Russia to visit her parents, sister and grandmother.
Spokesperson of the State Department Matthew Miller said, “Russia does not recognize dual citizenship, considers them to be Russian citizens first and foremost and so often times we have a difficult time getting consular assistance but we will peruse it.”
It isn’t clear how this donation was even noticed at this time. If convicted, she could face 20 years in a Russian prison.
