Dockworkers Reach A Tentative Agreement

After roughly 45,000 dockworkers went on strike at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, a tentative agreement has been make between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX). For the time being, an agreement was reached and the strike will be suspended until January 15, 2025.

“Effective immediately, all current job actions will cease and all work covered by the Master Contract will resume,” USMX and ILA said in a joint statement Thursday evening.

The tentative agreement, centered on wages, would increase workers wages by 62% over the life of the 6-year contract, sources say. By the end of the new contract, hourly wages would top out to $63. per hour, up from $39. per hour.

There hasn’t been an agreement made on the use of automated machinery yet, but it is expected that will be the main focus of the negotiations from now until January 15.

The tentative salary deal has to be ratified by union members and members would be covered under their old contract until January 15.
