New photos of the under the floor storage area have been released less than a month after 1-year-old Nicholas Dominici died from fentanyl exposure and three other children hospitalized at Divino Niño home daycare in the Bronx. It has been disclosed that along with the original 1 kilo of fentanyl found in a closet, an additional 6 kilos of fentanyl, heroin, and drug packaging materials have been found hidden in the floor where the children used to nap and play.
Bronx District Attorney said, “This was not really a daycare center. This was a drugs operation and they used babies as a shield in order to run that operation.” As stated by Damian Williams, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York after the original bust, agents haven’t let up in trying to find where the drugs came from and more than 40 more pounds of the deadly drug has been seized just 6 blocks away. Further investigation is ongoing to determine if the two are linked. This is at least the 3rd fentanyl bust since last month in the Bronx.
Juan Gabriel Herrera Vargas has been arrested for Operating as a Major Trafficker, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the First and Third Degrees and Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia in the Second Degree.
Frank A. Tarentino III, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) said, “The public outcry after the poisoning death of a toddler was not enough to stop a drug mill from operating just six blocks away from that Daycare. Trafficking organizations use these toxic mills to prepare and package bulk drugs into street-ready glassines for distribution for one reason- profit. Mills lurk throughout our city in apartments, basements or even under floorboards and that is why DEA and our law enforcement partners don’t stop working. Herrera Vargas took danger one step further and wheeled over 40 pounds of fentanyl around the city and on the subway with no regard to public safety.”
