Digital Treatment for Depression

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first prescription digital treatment for depression.

It is a smart phone app called Rejoyn and is now available for patients who have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder. Rejoyn is to be used along side antidepressant medications for people 22 and older.

The app is a 6-week program that has a series of brain training exercises. Rejoyn may stimulate the areas of the brain that experts believed to be related to antidepressant effects.

It isn’t clear yet if insurance companies will cover costs of the treatment because the effectiveness of the app are preliminary right now. More research is ongoing. Rejoyn will be available by later in the year.
