Dictionary.com Names Word of the Year

Since 2010, Dicitonary.com has chosen a Word of the Year based on data collected from search engine and social media trends, along with news headlines.

The 2024 word of the year is demure, an adjective which traditionally meant characterized by shyness and modesty; reserved. The word is now associated with a person’s appearance and the way they act at work or in public places.

Demure went viral over the summer and experienced a “meteoric rise in usage” from January-August. A 1,200% spike in the word was reported in digital web media alone.

Other words in contention for Word of the Year were “brainrot,” “brat,” and “weird.”
