DeWine Vetoes Bill that Bans Gender-Affirming Care

The Republican Governor of Ohio, Mike DeWine vetoed a bill brought to him by his own GOP led legislature.

House Bill 68 ( Enact Saving Adolescents from Experimentation - SAFE) would have banned gender-affirming treatments for minors and kept transgender athletes out of women 's sports. It was passed by a majority of the Ohio legislature made up of mostly Republicans.

It would have prohibited medical professionals from using puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and genital mutilation surgeries on minors. It also would have required K-12 schools and universities to designate separate teams for male and female sexes.

The Republican members of the legislature could override the veto if they choose to. They have not commented yet on if they will attempt to do so.

DeWine said after talking to parents, kids and medical professionals, he could not support the bill as it is written.
