Deadly Storm Slams Texas

At least 5 people have been killed in a severe storm that struck downtown Houston, Texas last night.

Houston faced winds that reached 100 mph, and some areas of the city had rainfall reaching up to 6.9 inches in a 24-hour period. More than 700,000 people were without power, and with several damaged and downed power lines, it could take weeks to restore. Several buildings were destroyed, shattered windows and broken glass are all over the streets. Some 2,500 traffic lights aren’t working, and downed trees and other debris is everywhere. Streets were also flooded. Schools and businesses were closed today.

John Whitmire, Mayor of Houston said, “Please…stay away from downtown – it’s dangerous.” He added that Houston was now in “recovery mode.”
