Deadly Floods Flow Through Brazil

Record rainfall from the El Niño weather phenomenon has caused flooding since April 27 in Rio Grande do Sul state, in southern Brazil, and more rain is expected. The death toll is up to 143 and 125 people are still missing. 


The government announced about $2.34 billion (12.1 billion reais) in emergency spending to assist with the displacement of over 538,000 people. More than $11.6 billion (60 billion reais) federal funds have been made available to the state.


Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said they will rebuild what was destroyed.
