Sadly, four were killed and nine more were hospitalized after the shooting Wednesday morning at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia.
Two 14-year-old students were identified among the deceased along with two math teachers and eight additional students and one more teacher were among the injured, but expected to recover.
Christina Irimie, 53 and Richard Aspinwall, 39 were the two teachers who lost their lives and Mason Shermerhorn and Christian Angulo were the two 14-year-old students who were also killed in the incident.
Colt Gray, 14-year-old student at Apalachee High School is the suspect who was taken into custody after surrendering when he was approached by authorities. Gray was being held at the Barrow County Detention Center. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Gray will be charged with murder and tried as an adult.
Gray was connected to several online posts regarding school shooting threats last year. The FBI’s National Threat Operations Center discovered the threatening posts and “the FBI’s Atlanta Field Office referred the information to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office for action.” After Gray and his father were interviewed last year by the sheriff’s office Gray said he wasn’t responsible for the threats, and his father said his son didn’t have access to hunting guns in their home.
FBI Atlanta said, “Jackson County alerted local schools for continued monitoring of the subject… At that time, there was no probable cause for arrest or to take any additional law enforcement action on the local, state, or federal levels.”
