Cyclone Chido Hits French Territory

Mayotte, a French Territory in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the southeastern coast of Africa, has been hit with Cyclone Chido over the weekend.

The cyclone was a category 4 storm that had catastrophic effects on the French archipelago; the worst in nearly a century.  Winds reached 136 mph, buildings, homes and structures were flattened, trees downed and electrical grids were destroyed. Schools, hospitals and the airport are damaged.

Mayotte Sen. Salama Ramia said, “ There’s no water, no electricity, Hunger is starting to rise. It’s urgent that aid arrives, especially when you see children, babies, to whom we have nothing concrete to offer.”

There have been 14 confirmed deaths and at least 250 injuries, but more are expected as rescue crews make their way through the rubble.
