In an effort to discourage non-members from shopping at their stores, Costco is adding
membership scanners at all entrances of their locations.
Gone are the days of flashing your membership card upon entrance. Now members will
need to get scanned in as they enter. If membership cards do not have a photo on them, a
valid photo I.D. will need to be shown as well. Members can get their photo membership
card at the membership counter.
Richard Galanti, Chief Financial Officer, said more people have been sharing memberships
since the pandemic. Galanti said entrance scanners would spare Costco employees from
having to ask shoppers for membership cards at the registers, and speed up entering and
checking out for customers.
