Comedian and actor Richard Lewis died peacefully in his home Tuesday evening at 76, Lewis’ publicist announced. Lewis had been living with Parkinson’s disease as well.
Lewis, best know for playing himself alongside long time friend Larry David in “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” had just begun airing the 12th and final season on February 4, with the series finale set for April 7.
In 1974, Lewis made his first appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” and became a staple in late-night comedy. As his stand up comedy took off, Lewis landed the role of Marty Gold, along side of Jamie Lee Curtis in the sitcom “Anything but Love” which aired from March 1989-June 1992.
He appeared in many TV shows and movies. Among the more popular movies he appeared in were Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Wagons East, and Leaving Las Vegas.
After learning of his friend’s death, Larry David said in a statement, “Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me. He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”
Lewis’ wife of nearly two decades, Joyce Lapinsky, survives him. He had no children.
