Columbia University President Resigns

Nemat “Minouche” Shafik, president of Columbia University has announced her resignation after months of criticism over protests on the campus in Manhattan over the Israel-Hamas war. Shafik has been criticized and pressured by the House Republicans to step down.

Shafik said in a letter to the Columbia community, “Over the summer, I have been able to reflect and have decided that my moving on at this point would best enable Columbia to traverse the challenges ahead…I am making this announcement now so that new leadership can be in place before the new term begins.” Shafik also said,

“This period has taken a considerable toll on my family, as it has for others in our community.”

Protesters set up encampments on campus and demonstrators barricaded themselves inside a building at the university. In May the school canceled the commencement ceremony due to the demonstrations. Over 100 people were arrested.

Shafik’s resignation is effective immediately.
