College Women’s Volleyball Teams Opting for Forfeit Against Transgender

Add the University of Wyoming to the list of colleges opting to forfeit a women’s volleyball game against San Jose State University (SJSU) who has a transgender player on the roster.

The University of Wyoming joined Southern Utah and Boise State, making it the third school to take the forfeit against SJSU’s team.

The announcement came in a statement from the volleyball program on Tuesday stating, “After a lengthy discussion, the University of Wyoming will not play its scheduled conference match against San Jose State University… Per Mountain West Conference policy, the conference will record the match as a forfeit and a loss for Wyoming.”

Blaire Fleming is a transgender, redshirt junior that plays as an outside and right side hitter and played two seasons at SJSU and a season at Coastal Carolina.

SJSU responded in a statement, “It is disappointing that our SJSU student athletes, who are in full compliance with NCAA and Mountain West rules and regulations are being denied opportunities to compete. We are committed to supporting our student-athletes through these challenges and in their ability to compete in an inclusive, fair, safe and respectful environment.”
