College Degrees Optional For Walmart’s Corporate Jobs

WalMart announced they are no longer requiring a college degree for several of their corporate jobs. The company feels that skills based hiring is beneficial not only for their business, but for their associates pursuing a job in higher level positions.

Lorraine Stomski, Walmart SVP Learning and Leadership said the company is looking to rewrite all higher-level job descriptions to “capture all the skills and the experiences that our associates have that would qualify them for those roles.” She added, “We anticipate and estimate that this time next year it will be hundreds of jobs…” Stomski also said having a college credential is still going to be relevant for many positions such as General Council.

Stomski said they are opening up access to roles and jobs that associates may not have been able to apply for in the past.

“We would love to be the role model in leading the way in skills and skills hiring,” Stomski said. “We have always, always not required college degrees for our field population, so this is in our DNA and it goes back to our iconic founder Sam Walton.”
