Cold Lava and Flash Floods Hit Indonesian Island

At least 41 people have died and 17 are missing when heavy rains and torrents of cold lava hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra over the weekend. Massive mudslides mixed with monsoon type rains caused cold lava to flow down the sides of the Mount Marapi, an active volcano, to the island.

Lahar, the technical name for cold lava, is a mix of volcanic debris including ash, pebbles and sand.

Mount Marapi is one of more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia and has been active since its last eruption in January 2023.
