CFP Approves 12 Team Playoff Format

By a unanimous vote, the College Football Playoff (CFP) board of managers approved a new 12 team playoff format.

The new playoff format will feature the five highest ranked conference champions and seven at-large teams for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. No conference will be guaranteed a berth, and there will be no limits to the number of teams from each conference.

The four highest ranked conference champions will receive a first round bye. The remaining highest ranking teams will host a first round game. The format will be...

#5 will host #12

#6 will host #11

#7 will host #10

#8 will host #9

The Quarterfinal and Semifinal games will be played in New Year's Six Bowl Games, and the CFP National Championship will remain at a neutral site.

"This is a very logical adjustment for the College Football Playoff based on the evolution of our conference structures since the board first adopted this new format in September 2022. I know this change will also be well received by student-athletes, coaches, and fans. We all will be pleased to see this new format come to life on the field this postseason," president of Mississippi State and chair of the CFP board of managers, Dr Mark Keenum said in a statement.

*** According to CFP executive director Bill Hancock, there is also talk of expanding to a 14 team playoff format in 2026.

"There's work still to be done," Hancock said.
