CCP Hacks 60,000 US State Department Emails

Chinese hackers linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) have stolen 60,000 emails from the State Department and Department of Commerce accounts. They also were able to hack Department of Commerce Security Gina Raimondo. The extent of the breach is still unknown. State Department officials said the hackers obtained access to the accounts after using a token from a Microsoft engineer. Microsoft also corroborated this statement.

A State Department spokesman said the agency "Takes seriously its responsibility to safeguard its information and continuously takes steps to ensure information is protected. Like every large organization with a global presence, we closely monitor cybersecurity conditions."

The information taken mainly dealt with Indo-Pacific Diplomatic Relations and discussions, European Diplomacy, Travel Itineraries and Diplomatic Deliberations.
