CBP Seized Fake Watermelons Carrying Meth

At the Otay Mesa Port of Entry Commercial Facility in San Diego, CA, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized more than 4,500 pounds of methamphetamine (meth) hidden in fake watermelons.

CBP found 1,220 packages of meth disguised as watermelons inside a commercial tractor-trailer coming from Mexico. The 4,587 pounds of meth has an estimated street value of over $5 million. The 29-year-old driver was turned over to Homeland Security.

Earlier this month, CBP officers also intercepted another 508 packages of nearly 630 pounds of meth hidden in a shipment of celery, estimated at $755,000.

Rosa E. Hernandez, Port Director for the Area Port of Otay Mesa expressed how proud she was of the team over the past few weeks and said, “As drug cartels continue to evolve their smuggling techniques, we will continue finding new and better ways to prevent these dangerous drugs and other contraband from entering the country.”
