Carnival Cruise Ship Catches Fire Again

For the second time in nearly two years, the Carnival Freedom’s exhaust funnel caught fire on Saturday while passengers were aboard. The last time the Freedom’s exhaust funnel caught fire was May of 2022.

The fire was reported about 3:15 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel. When the fire occurred, the Freedom was just twenty miles from the Bahamas’ Eleuthera Island traveling to Freeport, instead of its original port of call to Princess Cay due to strong winds, a thunderstorm and bad weather conditions.

Although not confirmed, and an investigation is pending, it is believed the exhaust funnel may have been hit with lightening.

There were no injuries or deaths to crew or passenger, but two members of the fire crew were treated for minor smoke inhalation. The fire response team on board was able to extinguish the fire by around 5:20 p.m. without the help of the U.S. Coast Guard. Passengers were taken to Port Canaveral today and any guests sailing on the ship set for March 25 and March 29 will receive a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit.

A portion of the funnel broke off, landed on the ship’s deck, and will need to be repaired. The company is hoping repairs will be complete before the next sailing date in April.
