Cargo Ship Crashes Into Bridge in China Leaving 5 Dead

Five people are left dead after a cargo ship crashed into the Lixinsha Bridge in Guangzhou, China yesterday. Lixinsha Bridge is in the southern part of the city in the Pearl River Delta.

The bridge was cut in half after being struck at the support pillars. One side of the ship was said to have hit one pillar, then the bow of the ship hit another pillar, making a section of the bridge deck collapse.

A bus, a scooter and a truck landed inside the empty container ship and two other trucks fell into the water. Three of the deceased were in the vehicle that fell into the river and the bus and scooter drivers were also killed. A crewmember on the ship had minor injures and two other people were treated at the hospital and are in stable condition.

The bridge is connected to an island where about 8,000 people live. A ferry service was set up for residents of the island. The area contains two of the world’s five busiest ports and one of China’s largest manufacturing and transport hubs.

Authorities are currently blaming the accident on “improper operation by the crew.” An investigation is ongoing.
