Border Problems in New Mexico

Updated: Mar 28

New Mexico is becoming the new hot spot for illegal migrant crossings. New Mexico shares 179.5 miles of border with Mexico and they are seeing an uptick in the amount of migrants, more since Texas installed razor wire across their border deterring migrants from entering their state.

More school campuses are going on lock down because of border patrol activity happening nearby. In the last week, there have been 2 incidents forcing schools to lock down. They are seeing a lot of activity in the mornings because smugglers are trying to blend in with traffic, as parents are coming and going from dropping their kids off at school.

Just across the state line, Sunland Park is the new hot spot for smugglers. When speaking of the migrants, New Mexico Fire Chief, Danny Medrano said, “What we’re seeing in New Mexico, on this side of the border, they don’t want to get caught.”

The fire department is responding more to migrant related calls, taking resources such as EMS and paramedics, away from U.S. citizens.
