John Barnett, 62, the whistleblower who publicly raised doubts about Boeing’s aircraft production standards was found dead in his truck in the Holiday Inn parking lot that he was staying in in Charleston, South Carolina.
After people couldn’t contact Barnett on Saturday, when he was supposed to answer more questions as part of a deposition in court, South Carolina Police were sent to the hotel to do a wellness check on him, but found him dead on arrival from a gunshot wound to the head. Charleston County Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal said Barnett died “from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
Barnett, who worked decades for Boeing, accused the company in 2019 of prioritizing raw numbers and profits over quality and passenger safety and rushing production. He said he tried to improve the quality and safety, but the company ignored his attempts.
“As a quality manager at Boeing, you’re the last line of defense before a defect makes it out to the flying public,” Barnett said. He added, “And I haven’t seen a plane out of Charleston yet that I’d put my name on saying it’s safe and airworthy.”
Charleston Police Department is still investigating the incident.
