Boar’s Head Provisions Company is recalling over 200,000 pounds of liverwurst and
other deli meat products due to concerns of listeria contamination. Boar’s Head
Strassburger Brand Liverwurst sold from June 11 – July 17 is being investigated.
Other deli meats being recalled are Boar’s Head Virginia Ham, Boar’s Head Italian
Cappy Style Ham, Boar’s Head Extra Hot Italian Cappy Style Ham, Boar’s Head
Bologna, Boar’s Head Garlic Bologna, Boar’s Head Beef Bologna, and Boar’s Head
Beef Salami all with sell dates by August 10. Boar’s Head Steakhouse Roasted Bacon
Heat & and Eat is also among the recall with a sell by date of August 15.
So far the listeria outbreak has killed two people and 34 illnesses have been
reported.
Listeria can cause deadly infections and multiple uncomfortable symptoms.
Symptoms can start as early as the same day, and up to 10 weeks after eating
contaminated food, with most occurring within 2 weeks. Symptoms include
confusion, convulsions, diarrhea, fever, headaches, muscle aches, nausea, and loss of
balance, to name a few. Elderly, pregnant women and those with compromised or
weakened immune systems may be at a higher risk. Listeria can usually be treated
with antibiotics.
If you purchased any of the recalled deli meats, you are urged to throw them away
or return to the store for a refund. It is also recommended to clean out your
refrigerators to avoid any cross-contamination with other foods.
