Boar’s Head Listeria Outbreak Taking More Lives

The Boar’s Head listeria outbreak has now taken 9 lives and hospitalized 57 since the nationwide recall on July 26.


Deaths have now been reported in Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Tennessee, Virginia and 2 in South Carolina.


The outbreak was originally linked to Boar’s Head Strassburger Brand Liverwurst, but several more products have been added to the list totaling at least 7 million pounds deli meats. Recalled products have numbers “E-S-T 12612” or “P-1261” on the labels.


This is the largest listeria outbreak since the one linked to cantaloupes in 2011, which took 33 lives and hospitalized 147.


Most at risk are anyone over 65, people with weak or compromised immune systems and pregnant women.


Symptoms can include confusion, convulsions, fever, headache, loss of balance, and muscle aches.


If you have eaten any of the recalled products and have any symptoms, contact your healthcare professional. If you have any of the recalled products in your home, immediately throw them out or return them to the store.
