Chicago Bears legend and Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus passed away at the age of 80 on Thursday. He died in his sleep at home.
Dubbed "The Most Feared Man in the game," Butkus was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979 on his first year of eligibility. He made the Pro Bowl in 8 of his 9 seasons before a knee injury forced him to retire.
"He was Chicago's son. He exuded what our great city is about and, not coincidentally, what George Halas looked for in a player: toughness, smarts, instincts, passion, and leadership. He refused to accept anything less than the best from himself, or from his teammates." Bears chairman and Halas' grandson George McCaskey said in a statement.
