Australia becomes the first country in the world to ban social media for children under the age of 16. The House of Representatives passed the bill by a vote of 102-13.
The ban will be applied to platforms including Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, X, and Snapchat to name a few. The newly passed law could have tech companies paying up to $49.5 million in fines if caught not complying.
Supporters of the ban mainly argue the effect of harmful depictions of body image on girls, the effect of misogynistic content on boys and bullying. Opponents argue the ban is too strict in which it isn’t allowing a parent to consent to their child having an account.
