Asthma Drug Can Help Patients with Food Allergy Reactions

The drug Xolair, which is commonly used to treat asthma patients, has had a breakthrough in helping people with severe reactions to food allergies that effect nearly 17 million people in the U.S.

The FDA approved omalizumab, marketed as the brand Xolair, after studies showed it helped reduce the severity of allergic reactions to patients ranging from adults to children as young as 1-year-old when coming in contact with certain foods. Foods used in the study included, peanuts, cashews, hazelnuts, walnuts, milk, eggs, and wheat.

The treatment would be through injection either at home or at a healthcare provider once every two or four weeks, depending on a patient’s weight. The drug would not eliminate the food allergies and patients are still warned to avoid contact with the foods they are allergic to. Xolair only allows patients to tolerate higher amounts of such foods without severe reaction.
