Arctic Sea Ice Could Vanish Sooner Than Predicted

Arctic sea ice could dissipate a decade earlier than originally projected.

Information published in the Nature Reviews Earth and Environment journal said the sea ice could completely disappear as early as September 2035. It also believes it could remain ice-free most of the year by 2100.

Scientists used satellite images from 1979-2019 in their research to see how the sea ice was changing. They reported the decline in sea ice is most likely due to human caused planet heating pollution and global warming causing climate change.

Nearly 13% of the sea ice is being lost every decade and the thickest and oldest ice has declined 95% over the past 30 years.

As the ice is thawing, the greenhouse gas, methane, which is stored in the frozen ice is being released into the atmosphere and that methane is increasing the rate of the warming.
