Add Amazon to the list of company’s on strike this year, and during a busy holiday season.
With less than a week before Christmas and Hanukkah, the Teamsters union along with Amazon workers launched a strike Thursday morning and began picketing at 7 distribution centers in 4 states. California has 4 warehouses taking part which include three in southern California and one in San Francisco; one in Atlanta, GA; one in Skokie, IL; and one in Queens, NY.
Teamster union members want higher wages, better benefits, more job security, and improved working conditions. Amazon claims their employees are already offered a 401k match, career growth opportunities, competitive pay, and immediate health benefits, and their average base pay was increased to $22 an hour in September.
Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien said, “If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon’s insatiable greed. We gave Amazon a clear deadline to come to the table and do right by our members. They ignored it. These greedy executives had every chance to show decency and respect for the people who make their obscene profits possible. Instead, they’ve pushed workers to the limit and now they’re paying the price. The strike is on them.”
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said, “For more than a year now, the Teamsters have continued to intentionally mislead the public – claiming that they represent ‘thousands of Amazon employees and drivers.’ …They don’t, and this is another attempt to push a false narrative. The truth is that the Teamsters have actively threatened, intimidated, and attempted to coerce Amazon employees and third-party drivers to join them, which is illegal and is the subject of multiple pending unfair labor practice charges against the union.”
