8 Teens Arrested In Fatal Beating

Eight teenagers were arrested and booked for suspicion of murder in connection to the fatal beating of a 17-year-old student near a Las Vegas high school, authorities announced at a news conference last Tuesday.

The student suspects’ ages range from 13-17 years old and the two outstanding students will face murder charges. Authorities are also working to identify two more students who are believed to have participated in the fatal attack.

The fight was said to have been over a pair of stolen wireless headphones and a marijuana vape pen belonging to either Jonathan Lewis Jr. or his friend on November 1st. Lewis Jr.’s friend agreed to fight in the alley after school, but as both parties squared off, Lewis Jr. apparently joined in to help defend his friend, then was fatally attacked. It is being reported that 10 students in the alley “immediately swarm him, pull him to the ground and begin kicking, punching and stomping on him,” Lt. Jason Johansson said.

When the fight ended, Lt. Johansson said a “citizen” in the area found Lewis Jr. unconscious in the alleyway and carried him back to the school campus where staff called 911.

Lewis Jr. was hospitalized with sever “head trauma” and other injuries, then ended up dying a week later on November 7th. The coroner’s office in Las Vegas had ruled the beating as a homicide and the cause of death was from blunt force trauma.

Las Vegas Undersheriff Andrew Walsh said the video of the fight was “extremely disturbing.” Lt. Johansson said it was that video on social media that helped the investigators identify the suspects.

Authorities are asking the community for help. “Many of you, and many people in the community, have seen the violent video that has circulated throughout our community via social media,” Walsh said Wednesday. “And if you, or your child, or someone you knew has seen that violent video, and recognize anybody that may have been a participant in this senseless crime, you need to get ahold of us.”

When authorities searched the suspects’ homes, they obtained the clothing that was worn at the fight, and that could help determine the criminal charges they will face.

A juvenile court judge will determine the detention of the suspects in custody and will decide if the trial of those under 16 will be in adult or juvenile court.

Clark County District Attorney, Steve Wolfson said the two suspects over 16 years old will be tried as adults. Wolfson also said he will review all of the videos to determine the criminal charges as to who will get murder charges and who will get assault based on the degree of culpability.
