After Sunday’s early morning, mass shooting in Ybor City, FL, Tampa police detained one suspect on site, 22-year old, Tyrell Phillips. Tampa’s Ybor City neighborhood is filled with several bars and nightclubs.
Phillips has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Phillips initially lied to police about his involvement, but with the help of videos and witness information, police were able to arrest him.
Authorities are searching for two others believed to be involved with the shooting that took place just before 3 a.m. Sunday morning leaving 2 dead and 16 others injured.
Apparently, the shooting followed a fight/dispute, which broke out between two groups, outside the Tangra Nightclub area.
It is believed, 14-year old Elijah Wilson, died on the scene, and 20-year old Harrison Boonstoppel, died at a local hospital. The additional victims ages range from 18-27 years old. Of the 16 injured, 15 suffered gunshot wounds; most have been medically treated and discharged from the hospital. As of yesterday afternoon, five victims remained in the hospital.
Tampa Police Chief, Lee Bercaw said officers were present when the incident happened and were able to respond within seconds. Bercaw said, “People were out on Saturday night. It’s three o’clock, the bars let out, there’s hundreds in the street.” Two handguns, one of which was stolen, were recovered at the scene. Bercaw said officers were able to charge Phillips “because of the community coming forward and assisting us in this investigation.” He also said they received a “plethora” of tips after asking the public to help.
“We encourage anyone who may have information to go to fbi.gov/tampashooting and submit photos or videos that could aid in the investigation. Even if you are not sure if the tip will be helpful, it may be just the evidence our detectives need,” Bercaw said.
